Rowing for a Roll!
Gorgeous day on Sunday 28th July. We met at 8.30am. Tide was on its way in so launching Cruachan was relatively easy. As it was a calm day (and the café at Benderloch doesn’t open until 10am) we had plenty time and good conditions to learn and improve our rowing technique.
Club captain, Melanie emphasized two aspects: keeping your arms straight for as long as possible before you do “the return” and keeping a good posture while rowing. The latter includes both maintaining a straight back while keeping your shoulders relaxed.
When you focus on a couple of things, bring your awareness and attention to this level of detail the immediate improvement in stroke is palpable. It also raises other questions: are your hips straight on, are you rotating, is your back hunched or are you bending at the hips?
We rowed out to the point looking back into Tralee Bay and had a bit of fun doing pyramid rowing which explores the effect of different stroke rates. Suitably tutored it was time to get coffee and a roll at the Beinn Lora café once we had made sure the boat was safe by lifting it to the seaweed line.
The tide was still rising when we returned, but we managed a graceful beach launch (featured in a few tourist photos and videos). We easily worked off our breakfast as it got a wee bit choppy for a short spell before we tucked ourselves back in behind the islands at the Marina.
A great day out!

Seil 10th Birthday Row
On Saturday 13th May 2023, Lorn CRC travelled to Balvicar on Seil, where we met up with three other clubs – Seil, Appin and Glencoe to celebrate Seil’s boat Selkie’s 10th birthday. The first teams set off towards the north, passing under the iconic Clachan Bridge which was looking beautiful covered in Fairy Foxglove. A team of photographers, both other club members and family along with some local folk who turned out to wave the teams on. Passing through the narrow straits and out into more open water, the boats turned towards the south arriving at Easdale Island in time for lunch. Seil provided us all with the most delicious picnic, birthday cake and a wonderful opportunity to just sit, chat and mingle with fellow rowers and friends in glorious sunshine. Full of lunch, the afternoon teams set off toward Cuan Sound where they encountered some very interesting water – fascinating wee whirlpools and running water. After turning the corner into flat water, the row was rounded off with leisurely final stretch back to Balvicar and a celebratory splash in the water by some! To cap off a fantastic day, many of us stayed on for dinner at the Oyster Bar in Ellenabeich which was a great social occasion. We’d like to extend our sincerest thanks to Seil for their welcome and organisation of such a great day!
